Run, run as fast as you can!

This week we’ve been reading ‘The Gingerbread Man’. We decided to bake some gingerbread so we really understood what was happening in the story.  Cooking is also a fantastic way for the Preps to develop new vocabulary and an understanding of measurement. Here are our completed gingerbread men:

We had a few left over gingerbread men, that were sitting on Miss Turner’s desk. Unfortunately. one naughty gingerbread man decided he didn’t want to be eaten, and he ran away!

Can you see him in this picture?

We made a map of the school, and went on a gingerbread man hunt. We didn’t find our gingerbread man, but we did Erin’s gingerbread man who was hiding in Mr Libreri’s office! If you see any crumbs or gingerbread man footprints, please let the Preps know!

Welcome to Term 4!

Welcome back to Term 4!

This term we will be learning about story telling, and we have been very busy already. We have spent the past week reading the fairy tale ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and doing lots of fun reading, writing and maths activities about the story.

Here are some photos of us working out which would be the best bowl to give each of the three bears. First we guessed which bowl was the big one, which bowl was the medium one and which bowl was the smallest one. Then we tried to prove our guesses by measuring how much sand each bowl would hold.

To finish off our Goldilocks week, we decided to tell the story ourselves. The Preps did a brilliant job of putting on a puppet show, and had such a good time that they asked Miss Turner to do the same thing next week! Here are two of the puppet shows. What do you think?

Spud Games

Potatoes have taken over our school!

Potato Gymnastics

Today we created our ‘Spudletes’ and participated in the first event – Potato Gymnastics.

We used a timer to time how long we could spin our potatoes, recorded the times and compared them. Congratulations to Olivia and her potato who spun for the longest and came first!

Meet Spot and Rosie

We would like to introduce you to our new pets!

These fish were sent to us by the zoo, and it is the Prep children’s job to look after them and give them everything that a living thing needs. So far they are doing a great job! We had a naming competition and they are now called Spot and Rosie. Can you guess which fish is which?

Adding 1 more

Welcome back to school! This term we will be working to improve our understanding of addition and improving our speed when solving addition problems.

Yesterday we practiced adding 1 by playing a game with a dice and counters called ‘Add 1 More’.

We used the counting on strategy, and locked the big number in our head, before counting on to the next number. We discovered that adding 1 is really easy!   To play the game, we had to decide who was going to go first and negotiate what to do if we rolled a number that wasn’t on the board. Miss Turner was really impressed to see everyone getting along and playing together so happily.

Well done Foundation M!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Today we read one of our favourite books, Eric Carle’s ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. Many of us have the book at home, or listened to the story at kindergarten. The book is in our classroom library, and the children love to read it to each other.

After reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar, we did lots of different activities about the story. Here are some photos of the work we did:

We also made Hungry Caterpillar sandwiches, all by ourselves!

Graduation Games Reminder

A reminder that next Friday 20th June will be the Graduation Games afternoon. This is an important fundraiser for Grade 6 Graduation, and it’s a lot of fun for the children who participate.

The Grade 5/6 students have planned lots of fun games for everyone to play. Children who bring $5 will be able to play 10 different games. There will also be a prize draw for children who participated.

Today we walked to the Darebin Creek and had fun. We used 4 of the 5 senses to explore the creek. We tasted our snack when we got back to school!

We saw: a bridge,  a bottle in the water, rubbish, trees, bugs, spider webs, flowers, bubbles in the water, grass with raindrops on it, mud, bicycle tracks on the ground, puddles, gum leaves on the ground, mushrooms and water moving in the creek.

We felt: rough rocks, hard sticks, rough bark, wet leaves and a cold metal bridge.

We heard: birds, water moving, bicycle wheels and raindrops falling.

We smelt grass, flowers, blueberries and gum leaves. Ahura smelt some flowers that were disgusting!

We loved walking to the creek. It was so, so, so fun! Thanks Sara’s mum, Robyn and Mrs Lewis for helping us.
